• “FamilySearch Reaches Milestone of One Billionth Published Digital Image“, by Trent Toone. FamilySearch has published it one billionth image and expects to publish another billion within 5 years.

• “Website Archiving Stories, Photos from 2011 Tornado“, from the Joplin Globe. The website rejoplin.com is working to preserve photos, videos, and stories of the 2011 Joplin tornado.

• “Second Circuit Upholds HathiTrust Verdict“, by Andrew Albanese.  The Second Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld and earlier ruling in favor of the HathiTrust in the Authors Guild vs. HathiTrust case.

• “All that Big Data Is Not Going to Manage Itself: Part Two“, by Butch Lazorchak. Part Two of a two part series on government data management. The second part looks at tools which meet federal requirements.

Web Archiving Roundtable: call for nominations

The Web Archiving Roundtable is accepting nominations for the positions of Vice Chair, Web Liaison, Education Coordinator, and Social Media Manager (1-2 positions to be filled). Interested parties should forward a brief candidate statement and bio to Tessa Fallon (Chair) at tessa.fallon@gmail.com and Trevor Alvord (Vice Chair, Chair Elect) at trevor_alvord@byu.edu by June 14, 2014 5:00 p.m. EST.

Elections will be held online in cooperation with SAA.

Position descriptions are as follows:

Vice Chair: (1 individual)
● Gives support to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of the Chair as assigned.
● Operates as acting Chair in the absence of the Chair.
● Serves as member of the Steering Committee.
● Fulfills all responsibilities specified in Section X: Roundtables of the SAA Governance
Manual.

Web Liaison: (1 individual)
● Maintains and updates roundtable website, for both SAA and external sites.
● Serves as member of the Steering Committee.

Education Coordinator: (1 individual)
● Serves as the roundtable’s liaison to SAA Education Committee.
● Arranges informal online meet-ups for members.
● Prepares educational experiences, such as guest speakers, etc.
● Serves as member of the Steering Committee.

Social Media Managers: (1-2 individual[s])
● Coordinates and updates social media feeds utilized by the roundtable.

Weekly web archiving roundup for the week of June 5, 2014:

• “Quick, Save Your Work: Justin.tv to Delete All Video Archives“, by Adario Strange.  Video streaming website Justin.tv will delete its video archives this month.

• “3 Ways the Russian Government Plans to Police the Web“, by Kevin Rothrock. The Russian government has proposed new regulations to monitor internet traffic. These include archiving data about users and possibly giving the Russian Federal Security Service real time access to that data, although some sites may be exempt.
